 Student disclosures
Student disclosures do not happen very often, however if a student does disclose that they are being harmed, remember not to panic and follow these steps:
 Listen
Reassure
Respect
Let the student use their own words, don’t ‘quiz’ the student and don’t be afraid of saying the ‘wrong’ thing. Listening supportively is more important than what you say.
Reassure the student that it is OK to talk to you and that whatever has happened it is not their fault.
Acknowledge the student’s bravery and strength. Do not make promises you cannot keep. Explain that you will need to tell someone else about what they have just shared.
Inform the Principal or one of the school’s student protection contacts (see posters throughout the school or the school website student protection link) as soon as possible.
